Alessandro began his musical studies at the Conservatory of Music of Campobasso (Italy), graduated in classical percussion in 2018 and in composition in 2023.
In his first work, Miniature (2019-20), for vibraphone and piano, the timbrical combination of the two instruments gives a generally quiet and reflective atmosphere, far from the rhythmic exuberance that characterizes some of the recent works. A trait this initially found in Tre pezzi per violino e pianoforte (2021), whit which he was awarded in two international composition competitions in Finland and China.
Mixing research and tradition he writes Voor Anne (2022), a melologue for narrative voice and piano with the use of extended techniques dedicated to the memory of Anne Frank. The sound texture links the words excerpted from the Diary of Anne, in a path made of different feelings and moods. The work is included in the archives of the Anne Frank Fond (Basel, Switzerland), responsible for the publication of the Diary and the writings of Anne Frank.
Influenced by some of the musical expressions of the contemporary scene, his recent works have a marked rhythmic component in common, sometimes linked to sonorities that can recall jazz. All of this without renouncing lyrical and expressive moments. These characteristics are present in Parenthesis (2023), a work for large orchestra.
With this piece he was selected for the Toru Takemitsu Composition Award 2024 and awarded after a concert performed in Tokyo by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra – Conductor: Yoichi Sugiyama.
The British composer and judge Mark-Anthony Turnage mentioned how much the four scores stood out among the 102 submitted in the competition, in addition to expressing words of appreciation for the quality of the orchestration. In the comments of the individual scores, Turnage found and enjoyed in Parenthesis ‘the extrovert quality’ as well as ‘the jazziness in it and almost filmic in some ways, in a good way’ (link: comments by Mark-Anthony Turnage).
A first real approach in this sense comes through participation in the Chigiana International Film Scoring Competition 2024, with a re-scoring of the final scene from Matteo Garrone’s film Pinocchio. The piece presented resulted one of the finalists out of 145 submissions from around the world.
He has been commissioned to write compositions for chamber music and solo instrument by concert associations and as part of international composition competitions. His works have been performed in Italy, Austria, Portugal, United States and Japan.
